Artists Supporting the Arts

ART FOR ART is dedicated to providing support for Santa Cruz County's arts community by hosting exhibitions representing a cross-section of today’s contemporary art trends and donating a percentage of its profits to help fund the SANTA CRUZ ARTISTS' ASSISTANCE & RELIEF FUND (SCAARF).
Art for Art does not have a gallery. Sorry, but we are not the Mill Gallery ... it has closed. We curate shows in various venues, including established galleries, a few times a year.
Our first recipient was the Tannery Arts Project in 2008 from our June 7th & 8th exhibition. ART FOR ART, June 2008
ART FOR ART, MAY 2010 In July of 2010, we established a fund to help artists facing career-threatening emergencies (SCAARF). OUR STAFF
Co-director, Dee Hooker has lived in Santa Cruz, California for over 30 years. She is primarily known for her mixed media real and imagined portraits. While her commissioned portraits contain subtle personality cues, culled from photo sessions and the gentle interrogations of her subjects, the fictitious portraits leave it up to the viewer to provide the character and narrative for the image. Dee is a SC Open Studios participant, art director of the SCCBG, co-creator of SCAARF and thinks that Sara and she are the perfect team. www.dhooker.com Co-director, Sara Friedlander has lived in Santa Cruz since 1973. Her work combines photography with painting, and treats the viewer to a fresh new perspective, whether her subject is Chinese women with bound feet, the Berlin Holocaust Memorial, the Apple Store in Manhattan, or the landscape of Eastern Europe. Either by printing a single unaltered photograph or combining and extending multiple images with paint, her intent is always to honor her subject, be it an individual, a culture, or the natural terrain. Grateful for her involvement in the Santa Cruz art community, she loves working with Dee, creating art exhibitions and garnering additional support for local artists in need. www.sarafriedlander.com
